Making a Case for Hope

Why do so many Americans oppose the ill-fated Iraqi war? Could it be that the invasion not only destroyed Iraq, but is now in the process of destroying our own country? Could it be that our people realize that the incredible cost in dollars and lives will take generations to rectify, if that can even be done at all.

Our country and our people are in dire straits.

Enter a leader who knows how to think and is courageous enough to tackle the mess created by our former inept leadership. This leader came to us with a mandate for PEACE not war, love not hate, and negotiation not retaliation. He dared to think outside of the war room box and urged Americans to look at how and why we have gone wrong in the past so that we can avoid making the same mistakes in the future.

The people chanted, "Yes we can!" because the people needed to believe in hope and the people needed to believe that our leaders have our country's best interest at heart. The people needed to believe that our leaders should know how to lead.

That kind of hope doesn't sit well with the super rich, or the pseudo-intellectual conservatives that blindly championed an arrogant leader who refused to admit when he was wrong. That kind of hope is shot down each day by self-serving television entertainers calling themselves journalists, and their networks that care more about ratings than the welfare of our country.

The ultra conservative networks, by following the lemmings no matter how dangerous, are eager to take yet another fated leap into the abyss by supporting radical movements that give birth to an increasing number of American terrorists. The real terrorists don’t need to terrorize because our own people are taking up the slack. How crazy is that?

A hefty dose of liberalism could possibly counter balance the obvious overdose of Limbaugh, O’Reilly, Beck and Coulter. Demanding that there be more critical thinking and less personal opinion from them would be a brain stretch, but isn’t it time to question what irresponsible talking heads spout?

Conservatives feign indignation when accused of being racists, but what else could it be when “Make Obama Fail” is their oft replayed theme song? In turn, they accuse a liberal press (whatever that is) of blaming all our current woes on the previous administration. Hello? Reality check. Racism is the real enemy and when it rears its ugly head we all need to stand up and fight it. We need to loudly and profoundly object each time President Obama is condemned for having the audacity to hope Americans can heal our broken country only if we work together.

Work together? Wouldn’t it mean that our elected officials would need to stop politicking long enough to put Americans first instead of their re-election? It would mean that the Party of No would have to put partisanship aside in order to see that it only makes things worse. It would mean that they might, just might, realize that America is hurting, breadwinners no longer earn the bread, teachers are asked to teach for no pay, the number of soup kitchens have tripled and our young people may not have the opportunity to receive a good education. We worry about being invaded by terrorists, but home-grown terrorism is on the rise and is getting stronger each day. What are we doing to stop it? Instead of helping along the fanatics and crazies who preach insurrection and the overthrow of government, why not show them up for what they are by not paying attention to them. The Tea Party Movement may not be all bad but it incites some people, like Timothy McVeigh to do bad things that hurt so many.

Disagreeing with government policy is a right of every American, but it does not have to mean blowing up buildings or taking other drastic measures. That is what foreign terrorists did to us. Are we going to do the same thing or are we going to behave like grownups and stop listening to the lies told by people who care only about themselves and not America as a whole unit.

Our country can be strong again but only if we work together to make it happen.

The American people have always believed in hard work, social equality and above all, hope. It is why we still chant: "Yes We Can!"
